All-New Nissan Juke - The next generation crossover SUV

The all-new Nissan Juke has finally arrived, and it looks amazing, with a stunning new design silhouette giving it a combined sporty and rugged appearance. The new Nissan Juke is the next generation of compact crossover SUV's and should set the trend for others to follow.

The Nissan Juke arrived on the scene back in 2010 and, to be honest, I was not that impressed by its looks or levels of performance. It did, however, prove to be hugely popular across the globe and has gone on to be one of Nissan's best selling cars in recent years.

It was different from what we were used to and gave us an alternative to the small hatchback cars such as the Ford Fiesta or the full-size SUVs like the Range Rover. The Juke slotted in nicely between the two, giving the best of both worlds, small enough for city driving with the added height and stature of an SUV. The Juke, in many ways, helped to kickstart the compact crossover SUV craze which has grown rapidly over the years. There are now countless crossover SUVs, in what is one of the most popular automotive sectors today, featuring the likes of the Volkswagen T-Roc, Skoda Kamiq, Renault Captur and the new Ford Puma.

The Nissan Juke comes in a choice of five trim levels; Visia, Acenta, N-Connecta, Tekna and Tekna+. There is also a special 'Premiere Edition' model available for those wanting something a little more unique.

Engines. Power and Performance

When it comes to selecting what engine to have in the Nissan Juke, the answer is pretty simple; there is only one available. There may be more engines joining later during 2020 and early 2021 including hybrid variations, but there are no diesel engines scheduled at all.

The single engine is badged DIG-T 117 and is a 1-litre, inline three-cylinder turbocharged petrol units which develop 117hp and 200Nm of torque. The engine can be mated to either a six-speed manual transmission or a seven-speed DCT automatic transmission. If you opt for the manual, then the Juke will hit 0-62mph in 10.4secs while the auto covers the same feat in 11.1secs.

The Nissan Juke is 2WD only at this time, but there may be AWD options later down the line. Thanks to the new eco-friendly petrol engine the Juke has a claimed combined fuel consumption (WLTP) of 47.9mpg. Pretty good for a crossover SUV, ideal for city driving.

There are three driving modes to select from each of which adjusts the weight of the steering, throttle response and gear changes (more relevant in the automatic). The three modes are; Eco, Normal and Sport. For the majority of the time Normal mode is ideal, but if you get chance to stretch the Juke's legs on an open country road, then slipping it into Sport mode makes the Juke come alive.

Interior Quality and Technology

The interior of the Nissan Juke has been transformed into a modern, chic and fun space to sit and enjoy. The dashboard feels sturdy and well built, using plenty of soft-touch plastic and high-quality materials. Nissan has brought the Juke in the 21st Century not only on the outside but also the inside, I really like it, and for me, its looks like it belongs in a more premium end car.

The seating position is great for both the passenger and driver with plenty of seat adjustment available along with a multi-adjustable steering wheel making finding that perfect driving position, much easier than in the outgoing model.

The entry-level Visia spec doesn't get the most amount of technical kit, with just a basic infotainment system with Bluetooth connectivity and DAB radio but little else.

All other trim models benefit from a new 8-inch colour touchscreen to access the NissanConnect3 infotainment system. Some of the standard features include; WiFi and voice recognition, smartphone mirroring with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Bluetooth connectivity and a rearview camera.

Opt for the N-Connecta or above trim levels, and you get built-in sat-nav and a 7-inch colour TFT display cluster in place of the smaller 4.2-inch found in lower models. The larger screen displays all relevant information in front of the driver, minimising any distraction from looking away. The Nissan Juke is pleasing on the eye, and the younger generation will certainly feel at home in this chic environment.

Space, Practicality and Safety

You will find that the interior space in the new Juke is a vast improvement over the outgoing model and is now able to compete more in line with the other string competitors in its class. In the front, there is plenty of space to accommodate the majority of adults no matter what shape or size they are. As stated earlier, there is a great amount of adjustment both in the steering wheel and column and the front seat. The one area which is a bit of a let down is that the seat adjustment is manual, no electrical adjustment even on the higher-spec Tekna models.

Climb in the rear, and this is where you find the most significant improvement in regards to space. A couple of 6ft+ passengers will fit in comfortably with a good amount of legroom and headroom on offer. The middle seat of the three in the rear does have limited foot space due to the transmission tunnel and is better suited to a small or young child.

There are various storage compartments such as cupholders, door pockets front and rear, an average-sized glove box and a small cubby under the central armrest in the front. The boot is considerably larger than that of the outgoing models whose capacity was 354-litres whereas the new Juke has a capacity of 422-litres. This extra space also means that with the rear seats folded down the total capacity is now 1088-litres.

The Nissan Juke scored an impressive 5-star Euro NCAP rating when it was tested towards the end of 2019. All Juke's come with a large number of standard safety features including; Traffic Sign Recognition, Lane Departure Warning, Intelligent Emergency Braking with Pedestrian and Cyclist Recognition and Cruise Control with Speed Limiter.

Higher spec models also get blindspot monitoring and Nissan's new ProPilot system along with many other additional assists.

Overall the new Nissan Juke looks great both externally and internally and should change the minds of those unconvinced by the previous model. Nissan has developed and improved the Juke in all the right areas, and if you're looking for your next small SUV, the Nissan Juke could very well tick the boxes.
