BMW X7 – A step into the large luxury SUV market

The new BMW X7 is the company's largest and most luxurious SUV. It is primarily aimed at fun-loving, adventurous families, who crave comfort and quality, as well as a smaller cars punchy and agile demeanour.

BMW's all-new addition to the increasingly popular X-Series design is sure to turn heads. The X7 has much of the design and special features of the smaller, hugely popular X5. Also, it has the luxury, comfort and quality of the BMW 7 Series Saloon. The most striking aspect of the X7 is the all-new double-kidney grille, which is tall and imposing but still stylish and impressive. If you are wondering just how big the X7 is, well it measures nearly 17 feet in length, 6.5 feet wide and almost 6 feet tall! The wheelbase measures just over 10 feet, which helps support the agile and grippy handling without losing any comfort. Making it nearly 10 inches longer and 1.5 inches taller than the BMW X5 giving the car a more utilitarian feel.

I was lucky enough to test the BMW X7 xDrive40i M Sport recently, which was kindly supplied to me by the guys at Sytner BMW in Nottingham. The model I drove also came with a few optional extra packages, like the Premium Pack, Technology Pack, Visibility Pack, which includes the excellent BMW Laserlights. The CraftedClarity glass application was a fantastic extra touch of luxury.

2019 BMW X7 Interior

The cabin is, by and large, the same as the recently redesigned X5 cabin. It looks modern and contemporary as it all flows effortlessly to create a feeling of quality. The accents on the dash make it look pure, yet divine while still giving a beautiful visual effect. The centre console is also identical to the one found in the X5. All dials, buttons and switches are grouped to provide a modern and efficient, yet fashionable appearance.

Even in the bottom end trim, the quality of materials used throughout the interior oozes class and elegance. For example, the entry-level xDrive40i comes as standard with black SensaTec leather seating. This seating can be upgraded further to the premium Vernasca and Extended Merino Leather seating fabrics.

There are a variety of colours and combinations to choose from, to give your X7 your personal touch. There is also an optional extra to change the roof liner and dashboard, so they compliment your other chosen features.

BMW offers a three-part Panoramic glass roof as standard. Allowing for a bright and warm setting within the cabin, helping you to relax and enjoy the smooth, crisp rides the X7 creates.

Technology and Innovation

The BMW X7 comes fitted with the latest 7.0 iDrive infotainment system, complete with a 12.3-inch central screen. This screen can be operated by touch, voice command or the traditional rotary controller.

Another excellent standard feature is the Parking Assistant Plus. The system will help you park in those tight, awkward spaces. This features a 360-degree camera, automatic parking and remote 3D view so you can see all around the car.

For music lovers, the X7 is fitted with a ten-speaker hi-fi system to give a full and immersive sound to everyone. An upgrade is available, to the stunning sounding Harman Kardon full surround sound system, allowing you to take full advantage of the Apple CarPlay.

The kids will love the optional Rear-Seat Entertainment Professional system. This includes a pair of 10.2 inch full HD touchscreen displays, a blue-ray compatible DVD player and more. Helping to keep them occupied on those long motorway journeys, therefore helping to promote a more harmonious ride for all the family.

Room for all the Family

BMW has created the X7 with three rows of seats. There are options of either a six-seat or seven-seat configuration. To do this the middle row is converted from a three-seat bench to two individual seat. If selected, this gives you more adjustment and a pair of armrests in line with the feeling of a front seat. The six-seat configuration provides more space and is arguably more comfortable. It also allows a gap between the seats to access the back row. Whichever set up you choose, the middle row seats are all electronically adjustable, so passengers can set them to maximise their comfort.

The boot is spacious, with a well thought out selection of electrical powered conveniences. BMW has fitted the X7 with air suspension front and back. This enables the vehicle to be lowered,  for ease of loading into the boot. The boot is horizontally split, allowing both sections to operate electronically, with the lower portion able to be used as a seat. It then holds a combined weight of 150kg. When the rear seats are in use, the boot space is limited to just 326 litres. By folding the rear seats flat, capacity increases to 750 litres. Then there is a further option of putting the second row of seats down, creating a massive 2,120 litres!

Engine choices for all

The entry spec petrol model is powered by a TwinPower, 3-litre, six-cylinder turbo engine. This offers up 340hp and 450 Nm while also achieving around 32mpg. The entry spec diesel is powered by a 3-litre six-cylinder turbo engine, with 265hp and massive 620Nm increasing the economy to about an impressive 43mpg.

If you crave more excitement and more thrills, then there is the M50d and the M50i, which have been tweaked by BMW's M-Performance team. Although the M50d keeps the same diesel engine as the xDrive30d, the power output has increased from 265hp to 400hp. The new M50i gets its new engine, a 4.4 litre twin-turbo V8 delivering a mouth-watering 523hp.

All engines are paired to BMW's revised 8-speed Steptronic automatic transmission, to give a smooth and seamless gear change at all times.

The BMW X7 is a superb example of how impressive a large luxury SUV's can be. This is achieved by paying attention to the experience of not only the driver but also the passengers. BMW has created a car suitable for all the family. It offers premium performance using the latest technological advances, but still maintaining the luxury and quality expected from such a prestigious brand. Click here to find your next car.
