Citroën C3 Aircross SUV - Small but quirky

The Citroën C3 Aircross is a small compact SUV with a quirky body and interior to help it stand out from the crowd. The Aircross is funky and trendy and will appeal to the younger market or those looking for something a little different from the standard array of small SUVs currently on the market.

The Citroën C3 Aircross was first launched in 2017 replacing the C3 Picasso and is a crossover SUV of the standard C3 hatchback. It sits below the larger Citroën C5 Aircross SUV but still offers a generous amount of space and practicality for all the family.

The C3 Aircross is a breath of fresh air and with a range of four trim levels to choose from; Feel, Flair, Rip Curl and C-Series and a selection of fuel-efficient petrol and diesel engines there should be a C3 Aircross to suit just about anyone.

The sub-compact SUV market is highly competitive with many strong models from rival brands such as the Nissan Juke, Renault Captur, Ford Puma and SEAT Arona. The C3 Aircross will have a difficult task to compete with these, but with a unique and funky styling and a generous list of standard equipment, Citroën has set themselves up for success.

Engines, Power and Performance

Citroën has reduced the number of engines down to just three. A pair of petrol and a single diesel offering, all of which are fuel-efficient and produce enough power to allow you to cruise along in comfort.

The entry-level petrol engine is a 1.2-litre three-cylinder PureTech unit developing 110hp and 205Nm of torque. It is capable of getting from 0-62mph in 10.1secs and will continue to a top speed of 114mph and has a combined WLTP figure of 44.8mpg.

The second petrol offering uses a 1.2-litre three-cylinder PureTech engine, creating 130hp and 230Nm of torque. It will achieve a sprint from 0-62mph in 9.2secs and climb to a top speed of 121mph and combined WLTP of 42.8mpg.

The single diesel offering is named the BlueHDI 100, a 1.5-litre four-cylinder engine generating 100hp and 250Nm of torque. The diesel unit will take the C3 Aircross from 0-62mph in 10.8secs and onto a top speed of 109mph. It has a combined WLTP of 58.9mpg.

Both the diesel and entry-level petrol engines are mated to a six-speed manual transmission, while the most powerful petrol unit is mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. Both transmissions work well and give smooth gear changes, helping to give the Aircross a smooth ride, whether in towns or on the open country roads.

All Citroën C3 Aircross models are fitted with front-wheel-drive (FWD), with no availability to have a four-wheel-drive system fitted. Citroën offers an optional system called Grip Control with Hill Descent Assist included. The Grip Control system optimises the traction of the front wheels, depending on the road conditions with four options available to select using the dashboard controls.

Interior, Quality and Technology

Citroën has continued the funky and quirky design stylings of the exterior of the C3 Aircross to its interior. The result is a modern and pleasant interior which is eye-catching and will appeal to the younger members of your family.

The interior is well put together, with everything seemingly located in just the right place. The dashboard layout is minimalist, yet through some useful design tweaks and visually appealing trim pieces, it looks like there is more going off than there actually is.

Each C3 Aircross model is fairly well equipped with features and assists which includes; a seven-inch colour touchscreen, DAB Radio, Bluetooth connectivity, air-con and smartphone mirroring with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard. Other standard features include a leather-wrapped steering wheel, 16-inch alloys and tinted rear windows.

As you move up the trim levels there are more useful features included such as; Citroën Connect Navigation, rear parking sensors and a Top rear vision reversing camera along with 17-inch alloys and extra safety assists.

The front and rear seats are soft, comfortable and relaxing, with the front seats offering up a good range of adjustment although there is no adjustable lumbar support. The Citroën C3 Aircross has a wide range of colours to choose from (up to 40 possible colour combinations) and a variety of “Ambiances” to choose from to tailor to your requirements and make it more unique to you.

Space, Practicality and Safety

Space inside the C3 Aircross is generous, and there is plenty of legroom and headroom available to the driver and front passenger even those over 6ft should have no issues. In the rear again leg and headspace is good and shouldn’t cause any issues unless you are very tall. Headroom is affected if you have opted to have the panoramic sunroof, so if you are tall or are likely to carry tall passengers regularly, then it would be best to avoid this option.

There are various storage compartments scattered through the cabin including door pockets front and rear, a couple of cupholders and glovebox. There is an optional centre armrest available which comes as standard on higher trim levels.

The boot of the C3 Aircross is one of its main strong points and is right up there with the class leaders. It has a capacity of 410-litres with an additional 90-litres available with the trim levels which have the sliding rear bench. If you fold the rear seats down capacity jumps up to 1289-litres, giving you plenty of space to fit large pieces of furniture.

The Citroën C3 Aircross was awarded a five-star rating from Euro NCAP when it was last safety tested in 2017. All C3 Aircross models have a wealth of safety features and assists as standard, including cruise control with speed limiter, lane departure warning, speed limit recognition + speed warning along with multiple airbags and ABS.

The Citroën C3 Aircross is a fun and funky car, which is reasonably priced and will no doubt appeal to families with young kids, who will enjoy the colour combinations and quirky finishes throughout. If you’re after a practical, fuel-efficient, small SUV that stands out from the crowd, then the C3 Aircross could certainly be the one.
